Sustainability
Albany: Building a Sustainable Future, Together
At the City of Albany, sustainability isn't just a concept; it's a collaborative effort woven throughout all city departments to ensure a healthy and thriving environment for every resident. The City acknowledges the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change and is committed to the the development of collaborative efforts across departments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience against the impacts of Climate Change. Recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, Albany centers its action through a climate justice lens to ensure equitable access to its sustainability initiatives.
The Office of Sustainability
Preparing Albany for Climate Change Impacts:
Join our collaborative effort, led by the Office of Sustainability, uniting City departments to advance sustainability.
The Office of Sustainability was first created in 2010 as the “Mayor’s Office of Energy and Sustainability.” Today, the Office is made up of two full time staff (as well as various fellows and interns) housed in the Department of Administrative Services. The Office of Sustainability serves as a central hub, fostering partnerships with residents, universities, organizations, to identify local needs and advocate for regional collaboration.
Today, the biggest obstacle we face is the global danger of climate change. Warming temperatures, extreme storms, rising river-level and increases in other climate impacts will continue to become more severe in the upcoming decades. The Office of Sustainability works to reduce Albany’s emissions, adapt to the changes already locked in, and encourage resilient neighborhoods able to thrive in the new world we are creating with climate change.
Equity at the Forefront
Through approaching our work through a lens of equity we ensure that our historically disadvantaged neighborhood receive the support required to transition to a clean energy future.
- 1 $11 Million to install EV chargers and electrify fleet over the next 5 years
- 2 43,019 KG greenhouse gas emissions saved from EV chargers to date - Equal to planting 1,103 trees
- 3 2025 trees planted by the year 2025 - Completed prior to 2025
- 4 Goal: Carbon neutral by 2050
- 5 100% City operations' electricity comes from renewables - as of February 2024
