ALBANY, NY – Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan has released the following statement regarding the early morning shooting on Hamilton Street:
“The depraved indifference of firing a gun into a large crowd with police officers literally around the corner shocks the conscience.
“The Albany Police Department is currently utilizing every resource available to identify those responsible for this brazen act of gun violence, arrest them, and ensure they are held accountable for their callous acts.
“Our residents deserve to be safe and that is why stopping the proliferation of illegal guns and those who violently hurt others with guns is our top priority.
“Prior to this shooting, the Albany Police Department's Pine Hills Detail was clearing a large, unruly crowd where individuals were fighting and throwing glass bottles at officers as APD worked to break up the fights and clear the street.
“We work closely with local universities and colleges in the City of Albany to attempt to prevent these large gatherings from occurring and ensure the public's safety. Given the most recent example of uncontrolled gatherings, I am also calling on the leaders of the student associations from the universities and colleges in the City to work together with my office as well as the Albany Police Department and their school administrations to stop disrupting their neighbors' quality of life and assaulting police officers, and to ensure they hold their peers accountable."
