[ARCHIVED] Statement from Mayor Sheehan Re: U.S. Supreme Court Decision in NYS Rifle & Pistol Assoc. v. Bruen

Contact: David Galin

ALBANY, NY – Mayor Kathy Sheehan has released the following statement regarding the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the NYS Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen case:

“I am deeply concerned for the safety of New Yorkers resulting from the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down New York’s law that limited who can carry a concealed handgun. Our common-sense gun laws keep our residents and police officers safer, and we have one of the lowest rates of deaths by guns anywhere in the nation. Gun violence has skyrocketed across the nation during the last two years, and this decision will make it even harder for our police department to discern between legal and illegal guns. I fundamentally believe, and the data shows, that arming ourselves with concealed weapons will not make us safer. I am appalled at the Supreme Court’s disregard for New York’s right to enact common sense gun laws for our State.”
