ALBANY, NY – On Saturday, June 5, at 10 a.m., Mayor Sheehan, other elected officials, members of the Albany 369th Veterans Association and Albany residents will commemorate Henry Johnson Day, the anniversary of Albany’s Sgt. Johnson’s enlistment in the 369th Infantry Regiment in World War I. Coffee and donuts will be served afterward. This event will also mark the launch of the call for nominations for the 5th annual Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service, given in the spirit of Sgt. Henry Johnson’s selfless service. That award will be presented at the City’s Jazz Festival on Saturday, September 11. If you would like to recognize someone who has selflessly given their time and talent to make meaningful contributions to our community, please nominate them by Friday, August 6, at www.albanyny.gov/252/Henry-Johnson-Award.

This year will mark the 103rd anniversary of Sgt. Johnson’s act of valor during World War I that posthumously earned him the Medal of Honor from former President Barack Obama in a 2015 White House ceremony. The event is being held in Henry Johnson Park between Colonie Street and Livingston Avenue on the corner of Henry Johnson Blvd. The ceremony will consist of songs, the placement of a wreath, and the telling of Henry Johnson’s story.

What: Commemoration of Henry Johnson Day and Kick-Off of Nomination Period for the Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service; the event will include music, a wreath-laying, a recounting of Henry Johnson’s life story and act of heroism; coffee & donuts will be served afterward

Who: Mayor Sheehan, other elected officials, Jim Dandles, the first recipient of the Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service, other members of the 369th Veterans Association, singer LaShaunda Motley, Wallis Howe-Rosenzweig, and Albany residents

When: Saturday, June 5, at 10 a.m.
