Current Status of the Project

We are excited to share the latest developments for the Albany West Community Center. Selective demolition and abatement are currently in progress and are on track for completion by February. The project is also out to bid, and we anticipate finalizing a contractor and breaking ground on construction in March. These critical steps mark significant progress toward creating a space that will serve as a vital resource for our community.

Past Updates:

March 2024

  • The city is in the final stages of conceptual design for the Albany West Community Center.
  • The goal is to create a full-service facility offering safe and engaging programs and spaces for people of all ages and abilities.
  • The building is designed to accommodate third-party vendors who can deliver community services on-site.
  • Over 3 years of public input have informed the design, including the programs, spaces, and overall functionality.
  • After final community feedback is collected and the conceptual design is completed, the architecture and engineering team will develop the final design during the summer.
  • The final design will be put out to bid for construction to begin in 2025.
  • Some demolition will occur, including the removal of the steel metal addition to make way for the new basketball court.
  • The remaining portion of the building will be renovated, and a pool will be constructed.

Winter 2023

  • City completed purchase in Spring of 2023 after Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments
  • Phase I assessment indicated presence of lead paint, asbestos both of which were expected and will be abated prior to opening
  • Phase II assessment of the site yielded positive results, no evidence of contaminants or issues requiring remediation
  • Design and Engineering Request for Proposals issued Summer, 2023
  • Building now used temporarily as flex space for APD staff while facilities at Henry Johnson are being renovated
