ALBANY, NY – Today, Mayor Sheehan and the City of Albany Department of Recreation Commissioner, Jonathan Jones, announced that registration for free summer programs is now open. (See attached flyer.) The program will offer outdoor day activities for youth ages 6- 13 from July 13 through August 20. Space is limited, so register here. Children must be registered by Monday, June 29, 2020.

Led by fun and caring instructors, the summer programs will provide four safe locations for residents of Albany to have their children play and be kids:
  • Hoffman Park
  • Swinburne Park
  • Arbor Hill Park
  • Westland Hills Park
As a result of COVID-19, the Summer Youth Employment Program was placed on pause due to the public health crisis. During the time of uncertainty, the staff at the Department of Youth and Workforce Services worked hard to re-imagine a summer program that would allow participants to explore career and educational opportunities using a virtual platform.  Online Registration is now open and has been extended through Wednesday, July 1st.  On line applications must be submitted by 4:00 P.M.

The 2020 Summer Youth Employment Program will run from run from July 20 through August 14th. Youth employees will work up to 20 hours per week, and must meet all eligibility and orientation requirements to participant. At the recommendation of health officials, in-person worksites will be limited, and most youth will have a virtual work experience. Applications will follow a first-come, first-served process, and registration does not guarantee a paid work experience. Click here to apply.

The health and safety of our communities remains our top priority and we will continue to take all appropriate measures to help keep our youth, families and staff safe. Vacations and time-off will not be permitted. Youth who have been assigned summer school must ensure that their summer job does not conflict with their instruction and study time.

Applications will now only be available online.  If you have any questions, after reviewing the 2020 online application instructions, please contact the staff at 518-438-1082 or via e-mail at syep@albanyny.gov

Please note, you have the ability to complete the application using your cell phone, computer or tablet.

The City of Albany's LIGHT (Learning, Initiative and Gaining Headway Together) Summer Youth Employment Program is designed to provide any young City of Albany resident, age 14-18, with a summer work experience.

The goals of the program are to:
  • Introduce and prepare youth for the world of work.
  • Help youth identify career interests and attain skills and good work habits.
  • Provide income to youth, which may also supplement family income.
LIGHT received a Livability Award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors for its Friday enrichment program, which includes a financial literacy workshop, a tour at UAlbany, a career exploration and college workshop, and a “Know Your Rights” program led by representatives from the Albany Police Department and the Center for Law and Justice. This “fifth day” of enrichment resulted from input from parents, participants and community leaders to make sure Albany’s youth are exposed to the broad opportunities that are available to them as they plan for their futures.

LIGHT strives to introduce and prepare youth for the world of work by helping them identify career interests and attain skills and good work habits. This is also a source of income for the participants.
