Albany Residents and Businesses May Experience Discolored Water as the Albany Water Department Repairs Several Water Main Breaks

December 06, 2019

ALBANY, NY – On Friday, December 6th, Albany Water customers may temporarily experience discolored water. The discolored water is expected to pass through the system by Friday evening as repairs to the water distribution system are completed. The discoloration is purely aesthetic and the water is not harmful. If residents or businesses experience discolored water, the Albany Water Department recommends avoiding the use of laundry to prevent the staining of clothes and running cold water until the water clears.

On Thursday, the Albany Water Department (AWD) shut down the Water Treatment Plant to enable a repair on AWD’s water transmission main located in Delmar. The repair is now complete and the Treatment Plant has initiated its start-up.

Starting Friday morning, AWD also began repairing three main breaks at various locations throughout the City. Any residents impacted by a loss of water service due to these repairs were notified before the water service was interrupted.

All of this activity disrupts the typical flow patterns and stirs up sediment in the distribution system. As the repairs are completed and the plant re-starts, the return to normal flow patterns may create very short term discolored water in the system.

Please contact the Albany Water Department at 518-434-5322 with any questions or if you continue to experience discolored water.
