ALBANY, NY – On Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, at 10:15 a.m., Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan will visit the Radix Center, the South End's Ecological Sustainability Center, to discuss how you can begin your own urban vegetable garden.

Mayor Sheehan will speak with Dr. Stacy Pettigrew, Executive Director of The Radix Center, and other staff to have a short, socially distant discussion about how to easily start your own "Victory Garden,” – even during a global pandemic – whether you own or rent. The Radix Center is a one-acre non-profit urban environmental education center that teaches gardening and ecological literacy to area residents, including demonstrations of sustainable agriculture and gardening, bioshelters, aquaponics, rainwater collection, composting, and more.

The conversation will explore:
  • What vegetables to plant now, and what to wait on
  • How to check soil to make sure it's safe for growing produce
  • Whether to pursue a ground-level garden, a raised bed, or a bucket garden
  • How to deal with Albany's clay-heavy soil
  • Where you can get seeds and plants locally
  • Where you can grow your vegetables in the South End and throughout the City of Albany
What: A discussion on starting your own "Victory Garden"
When: Earth Day – Wednesday, April 22, at 10:15 a.m.
