Albany City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar Implements New Property Tax Installment Payment Option

December 30, 2019

ALBANY, NY – Today, City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar announced that his office has implemented an installment tax payment option allowing all Albany taxpayers to make property tax payments in installments.  Previously, only low-income seniors were permitted to pay their property taxes via installment payments.  The local legislation allowing this new installment payment option was proposed by City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar, and was passed unanimously by the Common Council and signed into law by Mayor Kathy Sheehan. “This may seem to be a small change, but it is a significant one that can make a real difference to someone on a fixed income – allowing them to better manage their finances and save a bit of money,” said City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar. “Previously, if someone could not pay the entire bill by the January 31 due date, they would have to wait until they were ready to pay the entire amount, and they would be forced to pay the interest penalty on the entire amount.  Now they can at least save half of the interest cost with added peace of mind that they have more time to pay the remainder.”

The legislation is expected to assist homeowners on fixed incomes who are not otherwise eligible for installment payments as low income Seniors.

“Every year, we have taxpayers requesting to pay part of their tax bill by the due date while they await their next income check, like a Social Security payment,” said City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar.  “Until now, our office was unable to accommodate them, but now we can, like some other local municipalities.”

All property taxpayers will now be able to pay half of their bill by check or cash by January 31 with no penalty, and the other half with interest whenever they are able to pay over the course of the year.
