Mayor Sheehan to Appoint Joseph W. Gregory as Albany Fire Chief

ALBANY, NY – Today, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan announced that she will appoint Deputy Fire Chief Joseph W. Gregory as the new Chief of the Albany Fire Department, effective July 29, 2018. Deputy Chief Gregory enters the role having served on the Albany Fire Department for almost three decades – rising through the ranks as Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief. 

“The men and women of the Albany Fire Department work hard every day to keep our residents and visitors safe,” said Mayor Kathy Sheehan.  “Joe Gregory has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the residents of Albany and the Albany Fire Department.  He has the tactical and administrative experience we need to continue Chief Abriel’s proud work leading Albany’s bravest.”

“I am honored to accept the position as the next Fire Chief for the City of Albany Fire Department,” said Deputy Chief Gregory.  “I would like to thank Mayor Sheehan for this opportunity.  I am dedicated to leading this department forward while maintaining the rich traditions of the fire service.”

Deputy Chief Gregory holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance from Siena College and is a graduate of the Paramedic Certificate Program at Hudson Valley Community College.  He has received many accolades and accomplishments throughout his distinguished career in the fire service, including being named the 2017 American Legion Firefighter of the Year.

As per the City Charter, the Albany Common Council must confirm or reject the appointment within 45 days of receiving written notification.  If the Council does not act within that timeframe, the appointment is considered confirmed.
