For Immediate Release: June 7, 2018

ALBANY, NY – The investigation into an incident that occurred Sunday on both Erie Street and Interstate 90 has been concluded.

On Sunday, June 3, 2018 at approximately 3:00 p.m., officers responded to the area of Erie Street and Erie Boulevard for reports of a woman lying in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers located 21-year-old Nahjayyah Daise of Albany in the roadway with traumatic injuries. She was treated at the scene by medical personnel and transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

Shortly after the call, members of the New York State Police received a call for Interstate 90 eastbound on the area of Exit 6 for reported of a man who had been struck by a vehicle. Upon their arrival, they located 22-year-old Larnell Kennedy in the roadway unresponsive. He was also subsequently transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Through the investigation and from witness accounts, it has been learned that both Kennedy and Daise were traveling together in a vehicle on Erie Street. Daise was driving and Kennedy was in the passenger seat. At some point on Erie Street, Kennedy shot Daise three times in her head with a handgun as the vehicle was still moving. The vehicle continued to roll down Erie Street, across Erie Boulevard and came to rest on a utility pole while Kennedy was running after it.

After striking the pole, Kennedy went to the driver’s seat and removed Daise’s body and attempted to place her in the trunk but was unable. Kennedy dropped the body behind the car, got into the driver’s seat and proceeded to place the car in reverse. In an effort to flee the scene, Kennedy backed up over Daise who was lying in the roadway and was unable to drive any further. A witness who was stopped at the stop sign on Erie Boulevard also used his vehicle to “box” Kennedy in and prevent him from fleeing.

Kennedy then exited the vehicle and proceeded to flee down Erie Street on foot where he climbed over two fences and ran up a grassy hill to Interstate 90. Kennedy crossed over Interstate 90 westbound and while attempting to cross Interstate 90 eastbound was struck by a vehicle.

Kennedy and Daise were known to each other and have dated on and off for several years. It’s is unknown what the motive was or what occurred in the vehicle before Daise was shot.
