Heart Attack Subsequent to Car Chase

On April 10, 1987, Officer Barringer, 42, assigned to the Traffic Safety Division, became involved in a car chase which turned into a foot chase. Barringer struggled with the suspect and later died at home of a heart attack attributed to the pursuit. A 12-year police veteran, he was sworn in on 4-16-1975.

Survivors included his widow, Mary Kathleen Couchman Barringer; three daughters, Lisa M., JoAnn M., and Kristin M.; two sons, Stephen P. and Daniel J.; mother, Anna May Hazleton, father, the Late Guy Barringer; and two brothers, Roy E. (a former Albany Police Officer) and Lee R. Barringer.

Services were held at the Hearley Son Funeral Home on Western Avenue, Guilderland NY, and Church of Christ the King.
