Albany, NY – In anticipation of the impending bitter cold temperatures that is forecasted over the next several days, the City of Albany is imploring property owners to remove snow from the sidewalks adjacent to their property as soon as possible and within the 24 hour rule, which requires sidewalks to be cleared by 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
It is imperative that property owners keep the sidewalks adjacent to their property clear so all pedestrians can travel safely during and after snow events. According to City Code 323-21, it is the responsibility of all property owners’ and/or residents to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks and accessibility ramps adjacent to their property within 24 hours of the end of a snowstorm.
If the adjacent sidewalk is not in compliance within 24 hours of the last snowfall, the Department of General Services may clear the sidewalk of snow and ice, and the property owner will be issued a bill for the cost of removal and charged a fine.

There will be Code Blue in place for Albany County over the next several nights. Code Blue (CB) is a humanitarian cold weather program designed to reduce barriers for homeless individuals seeking shelter. A Code Blue is called when the temperature is expected to be 32 degrees or less, including wind chill.
Homeless individuals in the City of Albany in need of shelter can go to the Capital City Rescue Mission at 259 South Pearl Street, the Emergency Overflow Shelter at 646 State Street, or the IPH Safe Haven at 26 South Swan Street. Individuals in need can also call the HATAS Homeless Hotline at (518) 463-2124.
