FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Albany, New York – Mayor Kathy M. Sheehan announces that the Capital Hills Golf Course will be open for the season on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Capital Hills will begin accepting reservations for tee times for Saturday on Thursday, April 20th beginning at 7:30 a.m., and tee times for Sunday on Friday, April 21, beginning at 7:30 am. To schedule a tee time call the Pro-Shop at (518) 438-2208.

“The course came out of winter in great shape,” said Scott Gallup, Superintendent of Capital Hills. “ Due to the snow in late March, and heavy rains in mid-April the course is still a bit wet but this week should allow enough time and sunshine for the clay-based, hilly course to dry out.”

“It is a true rite of spring to officially open Capital Hills for the golfing season,” said Mayor Sheehan. “This year I am particularly excited to be able to offer our Veterans and active Military personnel a discounted rate to enjoy a golf outing here in Albany thanks to the hard work of Matthew Pickett.”

New this year, Veterans and active military personnel will be eligible for a $20 greens fee for 18 holes, and $13 for 9 holes to anyone who can provide proof of service.

Matthew Pickett, a senior at Albany High School and Battalion Commander of The Sergeant Henry Johnson Army JROTC Battalion, is the reason for this new golf rate for Veterans and active military personnel.

“I first noticed that the municipal course did not have veterans discounts when I started working for the course last summer,” said Matthew Pickett. “At that time, I was in the late stages of planning my Eagle Scout Project, The Veterans Victory Festival, which aimed to raise awareness for Veteran services in our area. I inquired as to why there wasn’t a golf discount for veterans and no one had an answer. As a JROTC Cadet and Eagle Scout Candidate, I have learned to truly appreciate the sacrifice of these fine men and women. I believe the least we can do is make their golf outings more enjoyable and affordable.”
