The Department of Water and Water Supply recognizes that sewage backups can occur in many places within the City of Albany during severe wet weather events. The frequency, duration and number of sewage backups vary depending on numerous factors. These include topography, sewer capacity, infrastructure constraints and the severity of the rainfall. To report a backup, please call our dispatcher at 434-5322. For more information on sewage backups into basements, please download our informational pamphlet below.

At the request of Mayor Jennings, the Albany Water Board has instituted a Backwater Valve Grant Program. This program was developed to assist owners of one- or two-family owner-occupied properties in the installation of new backwater valves. If you have repeated events of combined sewage backups, you should apply for the grant. In some cases the grant money may cover the full cost of installation. This program has been in effect since March of 2008 and has been extended until November 15, 2011. We have received over 260 applications and have approved over 235. You can download the grant application below. Also available for your convenience is a list of contractors and plumbers who have successfully installed backwater valves since the start of our program. there may be other contractors and plumbers who also are able to install the valves and you should carefully research any contractor before hiring them.
