Criminal Investigation UnitThe Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) is responsible for the investigation of most criminal matters in the City of Albany and to assist the Albany County District Attorney’s Office with the successful prosecution of such cases. The goal of the unit is to successfully investigate all crimes with diligence, efficiency, dedication and respect for all people involved. CIU investigates a wide array of crimes to include: homicide, robbery, sex crimes and assault, burglary, larceny, and identity theft/fraud cases. The CIU is often involved in the investigation from the time an incident is reported to the Police Department through the conclusion of the prosecutorial process. The Unit also specializes in ABC Law and conducts routine checks into establishments that serve alcoholic beverages. The unit also works very closely with the State Liquor Authority to properly educate establishments that serve alcohol on the rules and regulations that impact their establishments and the conditions that positively and adversely affect the surrounding community. The CIU consists of 22 detectives, 3 detective sergeants, and 1 detective lieutenant.
