Command Staff

The Command Staff of the Albany Police Department consists of one Deputy Chief, two Assistant Chiefs and three Commanders.

The Deputy Chief of the Department is second in command to the Chief and in his absence may assume the role Chief. The Deputy also overseas the Emergency Services Team and ensures training levels are expectedly high.

The Assistant Chief of Administration is responsible for overseeing all of the administrative functions of the department, including policy research and analysis, training, personnel management, crime analysis, and information systems management as well as communications. Additionally, the Assistant Chief of Administration oversees the Community Relations and PAL programs.

The Assistant Chief of Operations oversees the uniformed patrol force, which is deployed out of the South and Center Stations. The Patrol force has the responsibility of providing first responder, visible patrols, and community policing capabilities for the Department. Uniformed patrol is often referred to as the "backbone" of any law enforcement organization.

The Assistant Chief of Operations also oversees the Detective Office (comprised of the Criminal Investigations, the Forensics, the Community Response, and the Children and Family Services Units), the Office of Professional Standards, and Special Operations (comprised of the Traffic Safety, Mounted, and K-9 Units, as well as EST).

One Commander is assigned to oversee the Detective Office, and another to Special Operations. The third is the night shift Operations Commander. The entire command staff reports to the Chief of Police, embracing a team approach to Community Policing. Utilizing a collaborative approach, the Command Staff operates within the parameters set forth by the Albany Police Department's Mission/Vision/Values Statement, and engages in intelligence driven policing practices and strategies.
