2009 Proposed Street and Sidewalk ProjectsThe City of Albany Department of General Services’ engineers select the streets and sidewalks to be repaved and reconstructed each year in the City of Albany. Our goal is to provide a well-balanced street and sidewalk improvement program, consistent with available funding. Program funding is comprised of both City and outside funding sources. In recent years, traditional outside funding sources have been reduced due to State and Federal budget reductions. Despite on-going funding constraints, the City’s street improvement program has continued to grow. Our program is designed to complete the most work possible within the six-month warm weather construction season. We optimize our program by using a combination of pavement restoration technologies as well as a combination of private contractors and in-house paving with City Department of General Services’ staff and equipment. The project scope ranges from preventive and corrective maintenance projects to full-scale rehabilitation and reconstruction projects. We work closely with other planned or on-going private and public construction activities and utility companies within the City, and closely coordinate the various work efforts. We also coordinate with community groups and community resources to help ensure that we incorporate their needs into our program. The list of the specific work locations included in the City’s proposed Year 2009 Street and Sidewalk Improvement Program is shown on the attached two tables. Each location has been evaluated and selected by technical engineering staff based on visual inspections, review of existing condition reports, and coordination with City road maintenance staff.
