BZA is open to the public.

About the Development Process
All development projects proposed in Albany must comply with the City's new Unified Sustainable Development Ordinance (USDO).  The USDO, in coordination with the Albany 2030 Comprehensive Plan, includes zoning code updates and a streamlined, user-friendly process that aim to secure successful (re)development in the City.

The Commissioner of Buildings & Regulatory Compliance is the designated Administrator of the Zoning Ordinance, per the Albany City Code. All applications for development projects within the City must begin by filing a Building & Zoning Permit Application with Buildings & Regulatory Compliance.

Applications to the BZA, inclusive of the appropriate referral from Buildings & Regulatory Compliance, should be submitted to the BZA Contact located at the Department of Planning & Development.  Visit the Planning & Development office for further instruction on the appeals process and how to file.

ReZone Albany
For over two years, the City has undergone a review of its zoning districts through a highly public and community-based interactive process, known as ReZone Albany.  On May 15, 2017, the final revisions of ReZone Albany was passed by the Albany Common Council, at a 12-3 vote.  Out with the old, and in with the new...  Albany is proud to have in place, its new Unified Sustainable Development Ordinance.  The USDO aims to help direct safe and effective project development, that's better aligned with Albany 2030 and other sustainable best practices.  Visit ReZone Albany to read the new Ordinance.  Search your address in the online map below to see your new zoning.
